Social Skills Groups

Metro Therapy is offering social skills groups on a rolling, ongoing basis for elementary and middle school age students. Groups are run by one of our speech-language pathologists and are open to clients currently receiving individual therapy and those who are not currently doing individual speech, but would like to practice some social skills in a group format. Clients are matched based on age, interests, and scheduling availability and groups run weekly for about 7 weeks. Examples of social group topics include:

  • Interpreting body language and facial expressions

  • Practicing asking questions and making comments in conversation

  • Making and executing a plan with a group of peers

  • Problem solving with peers

  • Learning about different communication styles

Please talk to your child’s therapist or our front office staff if you are interested in joining a group.

Celebrating our Professions

April is Occupational Therapy Month and May is Better Hearing and Speech Month. We are proud to be OTs and SLPs! Watch our social media for facts, trivia, and information about OT and speech during these months.

Co-Regulation

Self-regulation refers to a person’s ability to adjust and control their energy level, emotions, behaviors and attention. It includes our ability to maintain a state of alertness and arousal appropriate for a given situation. This is a complex skill that begins in infancy and develops over many years. Children learn self-regulation through co-regulation with their caregivers. Co-regulation refers to the way we adjust ourselves when interacting with one another. It is when we support another person to regulate their arousal, attention, feelings and/or behaviors. Successful co-regulation requires the adult to be the calm in the storm during a child’s times of dysregulation. This can be a challenging skill to learn! Your child’s therapist can provide tips and support for learning co-regulation skills.

Student Clinicians

Metro Therapy is proud to contribute the education of future therapists by accepting students to complete practicums at our site. This spring we will have two OT students working with us. Student clinicians work alongside and are closely supervised by our therapists to ensure a quality educational experience for the student and continuity of treatment for our clients.
