How Pediatric Pelvic Floor Therapy Can Help with Bathroom Accidents
Did you know that pelvic floor therapy can actually help with bladder and bowel accidents? If your child is struggling with accidents, constipation, or other bathroom challenges, the muscles of the pelvic floor may be one piece of the puzzle.
My name is Reilly. I’m a physical therapist at Metro Therapy, and I work with kiddos who have pelvic floor dysfunction.
What Is the Pelvic Floor?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that sit in our pelvis, also known as our hip bones. These muscles sit like a hammock and hold our bowel and bladder in place. They help contribute to our posture and balance, support the bowel and bladder, and help us pee and poop.
Sometimes these muscles aren’t working the way that they should, and that’s where I come into play and help support the pelvic floor muscles and the surrounding musculature.
How Does Pediatric Pelvic Floor Therapy Help?
As a physical therapist, I can look at breathing and how your child’s core is functioning with the pelvic floor. We also look at habits. What is the child doing on the toilet? Are they straining? Are they holding their breath? Those are things that I want to look at as well.
We also talk a little bit about diet and fluid intake, as that can help support good bowel and bladder function. We also look at the strength of the hip muscles. We look at balance and posture and how those relate to the pelvic floor as well.
