When to Refer?

A referral for a speech-language or feeding evaluation is appropriate if

• Your child is not using any words by 18 months of age
• By 2 years of age, your child has less than 50 words and/or is not combining words into phrases
• Your child has difficulty with following 1-2 step directions by 2 years
• Tantrums are frequent due to communicative frustration
• You understand less than 75% of your child's speech at 3 years of age or less than 100% of his/her speech at 4 years of age
• Your child is not performing up to expectations in school
• Your child does not accept any table food solids by 12 months of age
• He/she demonstrates aversion or avoidance of all foods of a specific texture or food group
